8.32ha parkland in Bishops Stortford with 3 points of interest
Northern Parkland is an 8.32 hectare open space, located to the north of St Michaels Mead.
The large grassed open space is dotted with small pockets of young plantation woodland. The Plantations are managed by thinning out trees to give others a chance to reach maturity and retain their dense structure.
There are two enclosed children’s play areas and goals for informal kickabouts.
Part of St Michaels Mead is built on what was Thorley Common, which stretched to this area of the town. Across St James Way from the parkland are Thorley Houses: in the 19th century about 100 people lived here in agricultural cottages and made good use of the Green Man Pub on the corner of Thorley Lane.
The park is part of the ‘Parks and Beyond’ circular walk which links together five East Herts Council managed open spaces in Bishop’s Stortford – Thorley Wedge, Southern Country Park, Northern Parkland, Bishop’s Park and The Firs.
Local volunteers have helped to make this project a success by way marking the route, installing entrance signs and interpretation panels. Follow the waymarked (green and orange) ‘Parks and Beyond’ traffic free routes along grassy footpaths, bridleways and tarmaced paths, as they link together the five parks.
